Tutorial: Star Gatefold Card with Lanterns
Welcome to Part 6 of my Star Gatefold Card series! This time, I’m sharing one of my personal favorites in the collection, a festive design featuring stamped lanterns that capture the light and warmth of the holiday season. Just in time for Christmas. Whether you’re an experienced card maker or just starting out, this card offers a beautiful way to share a bit of handmade joy.
About this Christmas Card
For this card, I’ve used the Stampin’ Up! Light the Year Bundle, which includes both stamps and dies. The lanterns create a classic, timeless feel, and by pairing them with the Season of Elegance Specialty Designer Series Paper and Gold Foil, I’ve created a design that’s both elegant and festive. The contrast between the paper and foil highlights the lanterns beautifully, making them the star of the card.
Coloring the Lanterns
To add depth and detail, I used Stampin’ Blends Markers to color the lanterns. These markers are a fantastic tool for blending and shading, giving the lanterns a realistic, dimensional look. If you’re new to coloring with markers, don’t worry—it’s easy to get started, and I share a few tips for blending in my video class linked below.
Envelope Options for Star Gatefold Cards
For those asking about envelope sizes for this fold, the Star Gatefold Card measures just under 6” x 6”, so it fits well in a custom envelope or a 6” x 9” envelope if you prefer. A custom envelope can add a unique touch, and it’s a great way to protect the card if you’re gifting it in person or mailing it.
Free PDF & Video Tutorial
To make this card, I’ve created a free PDF with step-by-step instructions, template measurements, and a complete supply list. I also have a video from my class where I walk you through this fold. Both are available below to help you craft your own Star Gatefold Card with ease.
I’ve created this step-by-step guide for you. It provides detailed measurements, a template and a complete with a clickable list of materials for both the card.
I’ve also included some helpful tips on how to extend your standard 8-1/2” x 11” cardstock to a 12” x 12” size for the card base.
